Philosophical-theological College Brixen

The Philosophical-Theological College of Brixen/Bressanone is an academic formation and training institution, a place for philosophical and theological teaching and research. It offers the degree programmes of Catholic Theology, Catholic Religious Education, and Philosophy. While its principal focus is on academic theology, it also provides formational preparation and practical training.
The latter includes the Brixen Theological Courses and various other projects and initiatives.

The College is run by the Diocese of Bozen-Brixen/Bolzano-Bressanone.

Why study Theology?

The Study of Theology qualifies students for ecclesiastical professions and for the teaching of religious education. They are further a basic qualification for various other professions.
The Study of Theology is also aimed at personality formation. It includes a basic humanistic education, imparts a theological-scientific awareness of problems and sharpens the view of the world and the society in which we live.

Theology is talk of God in this time and in this world. But which God are we actually talking about? And what do we mean when we speak of "the world"? In order to be contemporary and critical at the same time, theology must therefore be willing to learn and engage with social debates and issues.

The theological faculties of Austria & South Tyrol are taking up this challenge with the Podcast "This Side of Eden".

“Dialogue between religions is a prerequisite for peace”, wrote the Bishop of Brixen, Cardinal Nikolaus Cusanus, in 1453 in his writing "De Pace Fidei".
Following his vision, the Institute "De Pace fidei" deals with questions of justice, peace and the integrity of creation in an ecumenical and interreligious perspective.

Eminent Personalities

Over the centuries, countless seminarians have studied theology in Brixen. Among them there are interesting and important personalities, some of whom have been canonised and beatified, such as Saint Joseph Freinademetz and Blessed Otto Neururer and Carl Lampert, who are commemorated in the Seminary Chapel.

Others have become famous professors, bishops, missionaries, etc.

The Institute for Religious Studies in Bozen/Bolzano regularly offers theological training courses, including the "Scuola di formazione teologica" and the "Scuola di formazione all'impegno sociopolitico".
